Westlake Island

If you want an amazing lifestyle of waterfront living, come to beautiful Westlake Island, a unique gated community in the heart of the Conejo Valley. Located on the county line of Los Angles and Ventura counties, island homes offer views of nearby mountains and access to exploring the lake by boat from your own private dock. The 125 acre lake also offers fishing and kayaking as well as boat access to "The Landing" for dining and specialty shops. The history of Westlake Lake is quite interesting. Originally known as Albertson Ranch, oil tanker and shipping magnate D. K. Ludwig purchased the 11,780 acres for $2500 per acre. Ludwig envisioned the rugged terrain as "The City In The Country". His vision did not originally include a lake. Portrero Creek ran the entire length of the valley and often flooded after heavy rains. Several solutions were considered and in the end the lake was chosen. The lake was completed in 1969 at a cost of $3.5 million. The new lake was stocked with thousands of large mouth bass and blue channel catfish. Due to strict rules of artificial bait and catch and release behaviors, the fish population is self-sustaining. Homes on the lake vary from small tract homes built in t he 70's to stunning newer custom homes; some on double lots. The gated entrance includes a 24 hour guard for extra security. Convenient to popular shopping, fine dining, excellent schools and easy access to the 101 Freeway.
